She accompanied Joseph to Bethlehemwhere Jesus was born. According to Catholic and Orthodox teachings, at the end of her earthly life her body was raised directly into Heaven ; this is known in the Christian West as the Assumption. Mary has been venerated since early Christianity  and is considered by millions to be the most meritorious saint of the religion.

Nor does the New Testament ever state that Mary remained a virgin. In fact, Matthew seems to contradict this when reporting that Joseph abstained from "knowing" her until the birth of Jesus. The earliest source of Mary's lasting virginity is the legendary first gospel of James.

In the Jewish tradition, a matchmaker helped to suggest a spouse for a young woman at the age to be married. God was ultimately given the final choice, through prayer, but rarely was the decision left to the young couple. Various traditions hold that Joseph was an older widow, while other traditions claim he was a strapping young man.
